NFC + E-Paper

The intersection of passive tap technology and always-on display. From Beatie Wolfe\u2019s NFC album deck to Waveshare\u2019s batteryless displays — and what comes next.

Use Cases

NFC + e-paper creates physical-digital bridges across music, retail, signage, and hospitality. No apps. No pairing. Just tap.

Music Cards

Physical collectible cards that open a playlist on tap and display the current track's artwork on an always-on e-paper screen. Artists get a new merch format. Fans get a tangible connection to the music.

Products: M-display MD-MC-MINI / VINYL / WALL
Example: minyvinyl.com integration

Electronic Shelf Labels

Batteryless NFC-powered labels that update pricing and promotions with a single tap from a store associate's phone. No battery replacement. No wiring. Works forever on ambient NFC energy.

Products: Waveshare 1.54" – 7.5" NFC e-Paper
Example: Retail · Pharmacy · Warehousing

Solar Signage

NFC chips embedded in solar-powered e-paper billboards enable passersby to tap for more info, directions, or real-time transit updates — while the display refreshes its content daily via solar energy.

Products: M-display MD-SG253 / SG420
Example: Bus stops · City info boards

Smart Business Cards

MOO pioneered NFC paper business cards (PowerCoat Alive by Arjowiggins). The next evolution: e-paper business cards that update your contact photo or company logo dynamically.

Products: 2.13" 4-color Spectra panels
Example: Dynamic contact cards

Album Decks

Beatie Wolfe proved the format in 2016: a deck of NFC cards, one per song, with embedded artwork. Tap to play on Spotify/Apple Music. M-display extends this with an actual screen that refreshes.

Products: MD-MC-MINI (credit-card size)
Example: Beatie Wolfe ‘Montagu Square’

Passive NFC Power

Waveshare’s breakthrough: e-paper displays with no battery at all. The phone's NFC field provides both power and data transfer. M-display Music Cards are battery-powered (2-year CR2032) for always-on display — but future SKUs could adopt passive NFC for zero-maintenance tags.

Products: Research: Phase 2+
Example: Waveshare 2.9" / 7.5"
